One woman, in a classic trench coat and sensible heels, provides a counterpoint, whilst the other leans in with a casual cigarette, sporting yellow knee-high boots that would soon be seen as either a fashion triumph or a grave historical error. This combination of optimism and slightly questionable sartorial choices defines an era of bold experimentation, where confidence often outweighed common sense.
They stand in front of a substantial personal automobile, a dark blue Mercury Cougar, which served as both transportation and a statement piece, its sheer size and vinyl roof signalling a prosperity that would soon be challenged by changing economic realities. The reflective glass façade of the building behind them suggests a modern corporate or institutional setting, likely chosen for its contemporary aesthetics.
The historian's note
This photograph, dated to 1979, depicts three individuals in a car park, characteristic of a suburban or exurban setting in New Jersey, identifiable by the state's licence plate format from that period. The subjects exhibit typical late 1970s fashion, including puffer jackets, flared denim, trench coats, and knee-high boots.
Prominently featured is a 1977-1979 Mercury Cougar XR-7, a popular American personal luxury coupé, distinguished by its distinctive body lines and vinyl roof. In the background, a white 1977-1979 Chevrolet Caprice Coupé is also visible, further dating the scene.
The modern, reflective glass building in the background represents contemporary commercial or institutional architecture of the late 1970s, suggesting a newly developed area or corporate campus.
