Somebody trusted a steel cable and a bit of 1950s engineering optimism enough to ride this car straight up a mountain, and the proof is the view punched clean through the window frame: switchback road below, a lone station building the size of a toolshed, and a track of cable running down into scrub and old snow like a plumb line dropped from the sky. The dark wooden mullions boxing the shot are not artistic framing. They are simply what happens when you point a camera out of a moving tram car and the car itself insists on being part of the picture.

Down at the base, a scatter of parked cars sits obediently where the road ends, the way people park when they have decided the rest of the ascent is somebody else's engineering problem now. The building beside them is doing the unglamorous work that makes the whole system possible - winding the cable, logging the cars, making sure gravity stays a theory rather than an event. Nobody down there is looking up, because by 1950s standards a working tramway had already stopped being a miracle and started being a schedule.

The landscape itself is arguing with the season, snow lying in the shaded folds while desert brush holds the sunny ground, the kind of in-between elevation where the weather can't decide what decade of the calendar it wants either. The rider aimed the camera down instead of up, which tells you plainly enough that the ride, not the summit, was the point worth remembering.
