On the image

Somebody climbed the slope above this cabin for the sole purpose of proving, in Kodachrome, that the path really did curve that gracefully through the pines. The dry-stacked stone walls flanking the trail are hand-built infrastructure, the kind of unnecessary craftsmanship that mid-century resort owners lavished on a simple walk to the lodge to make arrival feel like an event rather than a chore.

The building itself, half-swallowed by oak and pine, wears the shake-shingle roof and pale clapboard siding that every postwar mountain retreat considered obligatory - rustic enough to photograph for the brochure, finished enough to bill by the week. Whoever stood on this hillside with a camera was not documenting wilderness. They were documenting wilderness that had already been surveyed, graded, and sold back to people as a vacation.

The forest has had seventy years since to close back in over the stonework, but here it still reads as landscaping - nature hired to frame somebody's investment.
