The pony has clearly done this before. Its ears are back, its stance is patient, and its expression suggests a long career of standing still while children in plaid rompers learned to wave and balance at the same time, a skill nobody in the 1960s thought to separate into two lessons.
She has one hand on the horn and one hand up for the camera, which is the correct ratio of caution to showmanship for a girl who has just discovered that a pony ride can also be a public appearance. The saddle blanket is nicer than most of the era's living-room upholstery, which tells you the pony was a rental, and rental ponies in this decade traveled from yard to yard all summer, photographed by a hundred different families who each believed the moment was theirs alone.
Behind her a white clapboard house holds down the background with the plain confidence of postwar construction, and a cardboard box sits abandoned on the grass, doing the quiet work of dating the picture better than anyone at the time intended.
The historian's note
This scene documents a common domestic custom of the 1960s in the United States and Canada: the traveling pony-ride operator, who brought a saddled pony (often a Shetland) door to door or to neighborhood gatherings for children's rides, typically photographed by a parent with the family's home as backdrop.
The clapboard siding, single-pane sash window, and casual backyard setting are consistent with a modest suburban or small-town residential property of the period. Such pony-ride services were a recognized small business niche through the mid-twentieth century, declining by the 1970s as liability concerns and changing childhood leisure patterns reduced their prevalence.
No specific location, photographer, or event is identifiable from the scene; the record is a private family snapshot typical of amateur home photography of the decade.
